Every Friday during third period, the students of Parkersburg South High School enjoy a day of clubs. In September, each student got to pick the club of their choice from a wide variety of everything from Coloring Club to Harry Potter Club to Community Service Club. The students who participate in the Community Service Club meet in Mrs. Ashley Smith’s room and discuss ways they can help to better our community.

Because the Christmas season has arrived, Mrs. Smith and the students wanted to do something festive to go along with the theme of the season. Junior club member, Kadence Riggle, had the excellent idea to incorporate the objective of Operation Shoebox into festive Christmas stockings for the homeless men, women, and children in our community.

The Community Service Club, along with Mrs. Smith, has asked that teachers donate basic toiletries and winter apparel for men, women, and children; furthermore, the club has suggested that small toys and books be donated for the young children in homeless shelters. While this project is only open to teachers and members of the Community Service Club, there are other school based organizations that participate in similar projects all throughout the year if any students are interested. Kadence will be taking the stockings to the Latrobe Street Mission once school has let out for winter break.

This is a wonderful project and on behalf of our community, I’d like to thank Mrs. Smith, Kadence Riggle, and the Community Service Club. We will be picking new clubs at the beginning of the next semester, so if this project seems like something you would be interested in, consider signing up for the Community Service Club with Mrs. Ashley Smith!
