Tennessee is the newest state to adopt a law for cosmetologists. Senate Bill

No. 117 requires all cosmetologists to undergo training on identifying the signs of

domestic violence and reporting cases of it. Tennessee joined California and Illinois

in the group of states that are requiring this training.

This law is incredibly important for victims. Many victims feel more comfortable with reaching out to people they have long standing relationships with, such as their hair stylist, versus going directly to the police. With an increase in domestic violence cases over the course of the pandemic, many people don’t know who to confide in. This is a great outlet that can potentially save lives.

Many cosmetologists already have these clients, whether they know it or not. This law will provide the necessary resources to both parties. Parkersburg South’s, Jaden Robinson, believes more states should adopt this law because it provides resources to people who might not get them otherwise.
