Bob Saget was a big part of a lot of people’s childhood. He will be
remembered most famously for his role as Danny Tanner in the shows Full House
and Fuller House, but also as a hilarious comedian and television host. Robert “Bob”
Lane Saget was born on May 17, 1956, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied
film at Temple University, but his main interest in the entertainment world was
comedy. He began his comedy career at the University of Pennsylvania’s improv
class, which he attended simultaneously during his time at Temple. After graduating
from college in 1978, he moved to Los Angeles and began frequently performing at
one of the main comedy clubs in LA called The Comedy Store. His comedy career
was just the beginning of his successes.
In the late 1980’s Saget appeared in several television sitcoms and appeared
briefly on CBS’s “The Morning Program”. He was then offered the part as Danny
Tanner, a single dad who tries to raise his three daughters with the help of his
brother-in-law and his best friend. In 1989, he was also given another one of his
most famous roles as the host of “America’s Funniest Home Videos”. He later when
on to direct several films, but his heart was still set on comedy.
Bob’s style of comedy is said to be the exact opposite of his personality on
television. As an actor, he normally appeared as a kind, soft spoken, wholesome
dad. His stand-up acts however are said to be raunchier and adult-oriented. The
night before Saget passed away, he performed at Ponte Vedra Beach as a part of a
stand-up tour he was in the midst of. In an interview released after his death, he
states how “Humor is the only way my family survived” after the death of his sister
to scleroderma, which is a progressive connective tissue disease. He also said that
his main reason for continuing to do comedy was because he knew that it would be
healing for other people too.
Whether you know him from Full House, America’s Funniest Home Videos,
from his comedy career, or from one of his dozens of other projects, there’s no
doubt that Bob Saget had a great impact on the entertainment industry and the
lives of many people. Bob had a huge range of talent and used it for good. He was
an avid member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation Board of Directors and
helped use his platform to raise millions for the charity in memory of his sister. His
kind and compassionate ways will be remembered well and his legacy as
“America’s Favorite Dad” will live on in his memory.
